After the Convention: The future role of National Parliaments in the European Union (and the day after … nothing will happen)
Abstract:This article starts by examining the functioning of the Convention on the Future of Europe and the role of the representatives from national parliaments. The paper then sets out the main changes in the Constitution regarding transparency and access to information and the control of subsidiarity arguing that these would not make much difference for the current intervention of NPs. The article concludes by stating that giving more power to NPs, as was voiced in some of the rejected proposals that were presented to the Convention, is the wrong approach to fight the lack of democratic legitimacy of the EU.
