Abstract:

The belief that Muslim opposition to Israel is motivated by anti-Zionism, rather than anti-Semitism, has been a staple of anti-Israel propaganda. This claim is buttressed by the argument that the Muslim treatment of their Jewish minorities in the centuries prior to the establishment of Israel was superior to that of Christian Europe. While this is true to a certain extent, it is also true that Jews under Muslim rule faced systematic discrimination, persecution and at times, violence. Moreover, as this article shows, much of the Muslim and Arab anti-Zionist argument and the widespread Arab hostility to the State of Israel is the result of a deep, and profound, antagonism towards Jews and Judaism.
