Abstract:

In Accanto, Helmut Lachenmann used one of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's last works--his clarinet concerto--as the background, alongside which he placed his own musical material; hence, the title Accanto. In my article, I discuss some other and less manifest ways in which the piece explores the tenuous connection between musical present and past.
