Abstract:

American harpsichordist Sylvia Marlowe (1908–1981), more than any other player of her generation, commissioned American composers to write music for the harpsichord. This article places Marlowe in her historical context and surveys her significant commissions and recordings of works by Vittorio Rieti, Elliott Carter, Ned Rorem, Henry Brant, and others.
