Abstract:

My topic demands clarification at the outset, but that clarification itself may seem enigmatic. A Zen master, asked by a disciple 'Why are we here on earth?', cackled and replied, 'We aren't'. Somewhere in that answer lies the authority of the void. The essay is in five parts, with internal breaks, like printer dingbats, and shifting moods as befits the subject.
