Abstract:

An example of innovation in higher education is described, the Product and Manufacturing System design project (PAMS). An important aspect of this innovation is that the staff who run the project have consciously tried to adopt a leadership style of management, as opposed to a bureaucratic one. PAMS is a major engineering design project undertaken by teams of students. The project is spread over 3 years of various undergraduate engineering programmes. The paper describes the objectives of the project, the open-ended task which is set, the special method of selecting team members, the learning of transferable skills within the project, the method of supervision and the use of peer assessment as part of the assessment process. The operation of the project is then critically appraised using a framework of five headings: role (or task), responsibility, resources, recognition and rewards. The strengths and weaknesses of the project are discussed and some general conclusions drawn regarding innovation in higher education
