Abstract:

This paper examines the role of internal and external technical activity in the product innovation tendencies of New York State manufacturing firms. Evidence from a sample of electrical industrial equipment producers suggests that innovation rates are significantly higher among firms that subcontract specialized technical work to external consultants. A set of logistic regression and discriminant models are presented which show that locational factors play an important role in the innovation relationship. Specifically, the probability of successful product development is found to be noticeably higher in regions that contain rich stocks of advanced producer services. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of the role of regional factors in successful product innovation.

Cet article cherche à examiner le rôle du soutien technique interne et externe quant à la propensité à innover des entreprises industrielles situées à New York. Des preuves provenant d'un échantillon de fabricants de l'appareillage électrique industrielle laissent supposer que les taux d'innovation s'avèrent nettement plus élevés pour ce qui est des entreprises qui sous-traitent le travail technique spécialisé aux experts-conseils externes. A partir d'un ensemble de modèles de régression et discriminants logistiques, il est évident que les facteurs relatifs au choix de localisation jouent un rôle important par rapport à l'innovation. Notamment il s'avère que la probabilité du développement des produits réussi est nettement supérieure aux régions comportant des gisements riches en services de production avancés. Pour conclure, l'article discute brièvement du rôle des facteurs régionaux dans l'innovation de produits réussie.

Der vorliegende Aufsatz untersucht die Rolle innerbetrieblicher und außerbetrieblicher technischer Ta¨tigkeit bei Tendenzen der Produktinnovation in Industriefirmen im Staate New York. Befunde einer Stichprobe unter Herstellern elektrischer Gera¨te fu¨r die Industrie legen nahe, daß die Raten der Innovation bei Firmen, die technische Spezialarbeiten an außerbetriebliche Berater vergeben, bedeutend ho¨her ausfallen. Es wird ein satz logistischer und diskriminierender Modelle vorgelegt, die zeigen, daß Standortfaktoren eine bedeutende Rolle bei der Innovationszusammenarbeit spielen. Besonders die Wahrscheinlichkeit erfolgreicher Produktentwicklung erweist sich als merklich ho¨her in Gebieten, in denen sich wertvolle Besta¨nde an hochentwickelten Produzentendienstleistungen befinden. Der Aufsatz schließt mit einer kurzen Diskussion der Rolle regionaler Faktoren bei erfolgreicher Produktinnovation.
