Abstract:

Over the last 10 years, agendas for widening participation in higher education and developing discourses for developing university teaching have facilitated the emergence of frameworks elucidating accreditation of university teaching programmes. Concomitantly, university teaching programmes have been described as technicist and apolitical. This study investigates the experiences of leaders of programmes for university teachers accredited by the Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA). These programmes include an Equal Opportunities Value stipulating the preparation of university teachers for practising equal opportunities in the context of race. This study problematises the notion of race as presented in the SEDA Equal Opportunities Value and through interviews with the leadership of university teacher programmes elucidates concepts, practices and reflection on experiences in this milieu. The study concludes with recommendations for furthering the development of programme leaders preparing university teachers for practising equal opportunities in the context of race.
