Abstract:
The collection of essays in this Special Issue embodies an aspiration for an integrated, multi-level model of moral functioning. Our goal in this overview is to draw together some of the salient insights in the six papers in the volume and to suggest some further directions for research about moral functioning. Our observations fall into eight categories, concerning moral cognitive development between paradigms, the importance of early experience, the distinction between implicit/tacit and explicit/deliberative processes in moral cognition, the judgment-action gap, the importance of interaction and perspective-taking, the mediating role of culture, the not-so-menacing spectre of postmodernism and moral relativism and the educational implications of these themes in these papers, with special reference to the Just Community projects. Our observations are a prelude, we hope, to suggest and stimulate further discussions.Document Type: Research article
