Abstract:

In an analysis of the use of what I call 'generalized theme-oriented' opinions and 'agent-oriented' opinions in three videotaped Japanese business meetings, I demonstrate how the speakers in positions of authority used (1) generalized theme-oriented opinions to support their agent-oriented opinions, or vice versa, and (2) used generalized theme-oriented opinions and agent-oriented opinions to set the course of their talk and develop the talk to their advantage. Japanese speakers in business meetings may use generalized theme-oriented opinions when they strengthen their arguments in a strategy to persuade their addressee and maximize the outcome of the discussion to their benefit.
