Abstract:

In planning the reference work, Currency Companion to Music and Dance in Australia , an objective of the general editors was to include entries written by indigenous and migrant authors about their own music and dance. This article considers issues of intercultural communication, cultural representation and power relations that arose in conceptualising, commissioning and editing these entries. These processes involved varying degrees of negotiation and compromise between letting practitioners or other community "knowledge-holders" represent their own music and dance cultures and editorial and publishing priorities. "Filters", such as use of intermediaries to locate authors, intercultural miscommunications, community cultural politics and editorial interventions, served to distort and distance the final product from the original idealised concept and mediate the "authentic" voices of the authors.
