Abstract:

Exploring how Thai telecommunication firms are able to expand internationally given that they still depend largely on foreign technology, this contribution addresses specifically how the Jasmine group develops its competitive advantages in domestic and international markets. It argues that the Jasmine group's competitive advantages were based mainly on its vast connections with state agencies, politicians and financial sources rather than its technological expertise. Concluding that these types of advantage are short-lived and hard to sustain once the competition intensifies, it is pointed out how the rapid growth of the Thai economy and the inclination toward market protection has led to the emergence of domestic firms that are large in size but have yet to match their international competitors in expertise.
