This contribution discusses the evolution of human resource management (HRM) practices and trends in the Korean chaebols. It explains in detail the causes of the HRM transformation at Samsung in the early 1990s, focusing in particular on employee selection, performance appraisal, grading and promotion and pay systems. Finally, it discusses how the emerging HRM structures and systems fared during the recent economic crisis and their prospects for the near future.
