Abstract:

Contrary to some claims, Celan's 36-line poem "Todesfuge" is a fugue. This essay attempts to uncover the musical dimension of the text through select examples of the poet's technique. The hermeneutic approach examines the fugal structure and progression through verbal equivalencies. It concludes with some observations about one of the musical subtexts.
