The Problems of Perspective in Mongo
Beti's The Poor Christ of Bomba
Abstract:This essay investigates the complex rendering of three of the major characters in Mongo Beti's The Poor Christ of Bomba, his novel about the French mission project in Cameroon. Beti's characters are to varying degrees complicit in and critical of the colonial project, and their own internal contradictions and ambiguities demonstrate the complex dynamics and power-relations shaping individual roles and even identities of those involved in the system.
