Abstract:

The Slovakian writer and journalist, Irena Brezná, lives in Switzerland, writes in German and, like many migrant writers, has left behind both her homeland and her native language. Since 1989, she has again visited her former home country, now Slovakia and the Czech Republic. This article discusses her collection of articles Falsche Mythen. Reportagen aus Mittel- und Osteuropa nach der Wende (1996), written during her first return visit after the Wende. As the title suggests, it presents a complex, amended image of Central and Eastern Europe, as she contends with the feelings of longing that had developed over the period of her enforced absence.
