Abstract:

In 'Himmelhoch, zutode' (2001) Volker Braun takes stock of his life and the way in which Germany's turbulent 20th-century history impacted it. This speech, delivered as part of the city of Dresden's series 'Zur Sache Deutschland', marks Braun's return to the city of his birth, and forces him not only to remember significant historical events, but also to connect those events to milestones in his own personal and professional development: the bombing of Dresden and the death of his father; Prague 1968 and the loss of personal freedom; the fall of the Berlin Wall and the uncertainty of the future.
