Abstract:

This article is the published version of a lecture delivered at a symposium held at the Institute of Germanic Studies, University of London, in June 2001, to mark the sixtieth anniversary of the foundation of the Association of Jewish Refugees. It highlights the wealth of material available in the Association's journal, AJR Information, with special reference to the areas of relations between the refugees and the British, high culture, and the socio-economic status of the refugees in the post-war period. The style of the original, which was intended for live delivery as a public lecture, has been deliberately preserved.
