Selma Kahn – A Provincial Exile
Abstract:This article outlines the biography of the virtually unknown exile writer Selma Kahn who left Germany for Palestine in 1934. Her work consists of five novels and over two hundred poems, which are now held at the Centre for German-Jewish Studies at the University of Sussex. Although none her works was ever published commercially during her lifetime, their discovery offers us the possibility of a different perspective on German-Jewish life and the opportunity to study literary representations produced by a woman refugee from a rural background.
