Abstract:

Through a close reading of three of Sembène's works one can demonstrate that Sembène consciously wishes to illustrate how violence is not only futile for achieving change, but that it actually serves to harm the perpetrator. Furthermore, one understands in all of Sembène's fiction and films the message that consequences are dangerous for the protagonist who seeks to change his or her plight through individual action. Those who distance themselves from the strength and support of their native communities are doomed either to be victims of violence, or to commit violent acts themselves which lead to their demise.
