Abstract:

This essay examines the representation of Little Red Riding Hood in a wide range of recent French and Francophone texts. By studying a number of the traits that have traditionally been attributed to the classic heroine, it shows that contemporary authors and illustrators tend overwhelmingly not to imitate, but rather to subvert the conventional image of Little Red Riding Hood that dominated the male versions of the tale for centuries. The popular fairy-tale heroine offers an image of the child that is constantly changing to reflect the sociocultural and esthetic preoccupations of the times.
