Abstract:

The aim of this paper is to analyse the English reception of plays by the Nobel prize-winning Italian actor, playwright and director Dario Fo and his wife and collaborator Franca Rame. The main obstacle is that of contextualizing Fo and Rame's plays, given their indefinite, often improvised, nature and their strict connection to the Italian political situation and contemporary history. The main element of my investigation is the process of acculturation involved in the translation of Fo and Rame's plays through which their 'foreign peculiarities' are rewritten in terms familiar to British spectators. A question which needs to be answered, is how the popular nature of their theatre, which is addressed to workers, students, housewives and the unemployed, is affected when their plays are staged in West End theatres, as in the case of Accidental death of an anarchist.
