Abstract:

Intertextuality is the underlying principle on which Hanns-Josef Ortheil's novel Faustinas Küsse (1998) is constructed. Ortheil assumes that the the reader of his novel has knowledge of Goethe's eighteenth Roman Elegy in which Faustine is introduced. Ortheil plays with the reflection of one text in the other. This is an essential element of postmodernist literature. The other element is the reference, the novel as texture has to itself. Ortheil undoubtedly is a postmodernist writer.
