Representational discourses about the New World are characterised by an ethno- and eurocentric feeling of superiority which hindered as a rule authentic intercultural exchange. This intellectual “blockade” was present even in cases where the triumphal discourse of conquest was deconstructed, such as Álvar Núñez's Naufragios. Although the feeling of superiority at the intellectual level remains, on the pragmatic and affective levels there is, however, a growing attempt to approach the “other”, which leads to the first stages in building an intercultural bridge.
