Both groups of contemporary writers belonging to the literary avant-garde Oulipo (founded 1960) and Oplepo (founded 1990) use the comic as a means of reaching their goals. Taking the trilogy La belle Hortense (1985), L'enlèvement d'Hortense (1987) and L'exil d'Hortense (1990) from the French writer Jacques Roubaud and the stories from the Italian writer Ermanno Cavazzoni I sette cuori (1992) as a basis for analysis, the nature and effect of their comedy are assessed in relation to the interplay between the comic and the avant-garde.
