The French and International Collège de 'Pataphysique is based on the 'science of imaginary solutions' created by Alfred Jarry. Founded in 1948, the elitist secret society, far beyond the mere parody of scientific institutions, emphasizes its serious intention to criticize and undermine rationalistic reductionism and to create a universal science of exceptions stimulating creativity and imagination. In 1961, two active members of the Collège founded the Ouvroir de littérature potentielle. The relationship between the two institutions became more and more loose due to the fact that the first generation was vanishing and due to the development Oulipo has undergone in the last decades. In the evolution of the historical avant-gardes with their totalitarian background towards post-avantgardes like Oulipo, the Collège represents an interesting and ambivalent missing link.
