Abstract:

With stoical persistence the dramatist Werner Fritsch has stood up for a theatre of memory in the past years which does not turn away from the terrors of history and nevertheless does not give up the idea of redemption. The present contribution sketches the main features of this project, which declares the theatre a place of the Other: of silence, of concentration, of pausing and thinking as presuppositions of the new beginning that Fritsch grounds in Hannah Arendt's concept of natality.
