Abstract:
Arnold Zweig's Der Streit um den Sergeanten Grischa (1927) is the first in a long series of anti-war novels which occupied Zweig for most of his life. All of them criticize the German war effort as a machinery that hast its own brutal logic and does not even shy away from the most inhuman atrocities. Resisting "heroes" in these novels are for the most part either liberal intellectuals or class-conscious workers who try to enlighten the other soldiers about the imperialistic and therefore murderous nature of war.Document Type: Research article
