In Johannes R. Becher's novel (CH Cl = CH)3 As (Levisite) oder Der einzig gerechte Krieg (1926) a line is drawn from the experience of chemical warfare since 1915 to a possible civil war in the future (seen from 1925), in which the capitalist system destroys itself. "Gas" is here the metaphor for capitalism, and its use in a future war marks the turning point in an apocalyptic process, out of which Communism is born.Document Type: Research article
