Abstract:

While travelling seems to be the "original sin" of modernity (according to Defoe's Robinson Crusoe), German writers of travelogues and travel fictions under postmodern conditions have learned the lessons of globalization. In a world wide web of textualized travel experiences, attempts of 'authentic' experience are frequent but paradoxical. In Christoph Ransmayr's, Sten Nadolny's and Klaus Modick's prose fictions, adventurous travelling is countered by postmodernity's intertextual and metafictional playfulness. Re-writing the classical topoi of voyage and discovery, their novels question the epistemological framework of the conquest of space as well as the expansive steps of Western Civilization.
