Abstract:

By referring to Christa Reinig's novel Entmannung, published in 1976, I show how literary analysis can be involved in a postmodern discourse. A philosophical matrix for this article is Judith Butler's reflection on cultural construction of sex and gender, performances of gender, and a power of interpretation. Reinig resigns in her novel from the narrator's authority, but not from a narrator itself. In this way, on the one hand, she strips off a firm narrative perspective and, on the other hand, she plays with the reader's expectations by evoking them with told stories.
