Abstract:

Ernst Bloch's Philosophy of Hope has a strong impact on Volker Braun's work. In his narration "Das Nichtgelebte" (1995), Braun uses central elements of Bloch's philosophy to portray in the character of Georg the inner ambivalence of a critical but loyal GDR intellectual. In his longing for an ideal society, Georg is unable to free himself mently from ideological oppression executed by an SED representative. Although he understands the reasons for his past failure, after 1989 Georg renews his be lief in the "Principle of Hope" and the possibility of a utopian society.
