Abstract:
This contribution focusses on the textual realization of the image of Penelope as one of the main constituents of Strauss' text in transporting meaning. Penelope's image of herself and the picture others have of her are based upon her body as a female one. By examining Ithaka's intertextual relations with Homer's "Odyssee" and the discourse of representing 'woman' in our western culture, various aspects of the image of Penelope can be unraveled. In its concrete form it is presented as a portrait of external features, a psychological sketch or, as is the case in the final scene, like a sculpture to be read, to mention the most important instances.Document Type: Research article
