Cancer standards for primary care
Abstract:Avon Primary Care Audit Group (PCAG) were asked by the Avon Primary Care Clinical Governance Group to lead the development of local cancer standards for primary care. The work was undertaken in collaboration with Avon Health Authority (AHA) and Avon, Somerset and Wiltshire Cancer Services (ASWCS).
The development of the standards involved consultation with a wide cross-section of care providers, from both primary and secondary care, as well as service users. There were two parts to the consultation process: a multidisciplinary study day and a series of focus groups with cancer patients and carers.
The results of these two initiatives were combined to produce 29 standards for primary care that take a holistic patient-centred approach, that represent good practice and should bring about health improvements.
The completed work has gone to all 12 PCGs in Avon to be used by the clinical governance and cancer leads in developing and improving care for those patients with cancer.
