Abstract:
There is evidence that tonsillectomy is a worthwhile intervention in patients who have suffered seven documented throat infections in the year prior to surgery, five per year in the two years prior to surgery, or three per year in the three years prior to surgery. Two surveys were carried out of patients who underwent tonsillectomy to establish how many met these criteria. Only one-quarter of tonsillectomies for recurrent throat infection meet evidence-based criteria. This suggests that just over half of all tonsillectomies are evidence-based.Keywords: EVIDENCE-BASED; MEDICINE; THROAT; INFECTION; TONSILLECTOMY
