Abstract:

Comparative audit entails measuring aspects of clinical performance and comparing them to the standards achieved by similar hospitals or units, i.e. comparing performance against what is known to be achievable rather than against nirvana. The successful stroke and myocardial infarction projects have demonstrated how important the planning, set up and validation phases are in such studies. When a study is established with a methodology that is accepted to be robust, clinicians and managers will accept and act on the results leading to better patient care and probably to an improved outcome for patients. The techniques described from these studies are almost certainly translatable to many other areas of medical practice.
