Abstract:

Key lessons in leadership can be obtained from visiting other places and people and learning from their experiences. An exchange visit was undertaken by five orthopaedic trainees and their consultants to a renowned orthopaedic institute in Rizzoli, Bologna. Throughout the trip, the trainees were encouraged to think about the leadership values and styles they encountered, the differences in practice between the institute and the National Health Service and to think of areas where the things they had seen could be translated into service improvement back at home.
