Abstract:

Increasing life expectancy and ever-growing expectations of health, in combination with the fiscal challenge for high-value care, warrant new models of leadership and professionalism. Learning from recent unexpected political partnerships, we advocate a partnership approach to clinical leadership: one that sees clinicians job-sharing leadership roles. This approach could be extended to a more sophisticated level – partnering those from different professional backgrounds into a combined leadership capacity, to bridge the silos that are currently perpetuated. Unarguably, change is hard. However, such are the challenges that lie ahead for the NHS that resilience is essential. We believe that in the current climate, harnessing the power of we, over the power of I, offers as yet untapped potential in the NHS for improving the ultimate quality and experience of patient care.
