Abstract:

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN IN THIS AREA

• Research from the UK shows that the formative assessment of consultation skills using the Leicester assessment package has good educational impact.

• Feedback on video-recordings of consultations has been demonstrated to be an effective means of learning and changing behaviour.

WHAT THIS WORK ADDS

• This is the first study reporting on the formative assessment of consultation skills using video-recordings of consultations in the setting of an Irish general practice training programme.

SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE RESEARCH

• This assessment tool should be evaluated in larger numbers of specialty registrars and across Irish general practice training programmes.
