Abstract:

The article examines problems with anaesthetic manpower provision, and hypothesises about its effects on hospital services. Current activity provided by anaesthetists has been threatened by, amongst other things, the institution of the New Consultant Contract, which has reduced the availability of consultants for elective lists. The various issues are outlined in detail, and some short-term solutions are proposed.
