This paper describes the position of appraisal for doctors as it is emerging in the NHS. It discusses the tensions inherent in using appraisal as the sole vehicle for making decisions about relicensing doctors (revalidation). It suggests how these tensions might be resolved by careful distinction between appraisal and assessment, so that both can be incorporated into an overall process of continuing performance review.
