Abstract:

The performance of the NHS trusts and their consultants are inextricably entwined. Considerable time is now taken to assess trainee doctor performance and yet there is little evidence of any concerted, let alone good, method of assessment of consultant performance in the NHS. Whilst appraisal may provide the basis for revalidating doctors as fit to practise, it does not yet provide a robust platform for assessing or managing consultant performance within a trust. This article represents a personal view of the current situation and how it might be improved.
