Making the NHS functional: the 'ACT' model
Abstract:The NHS is advancing at an exhilarating pace, and services are burgeoning. Despite this, morale seems to be at an all-time low. This paper proposes that this is because of dissociation and disharmony between three fundamental activities: Activation, Communication and Teamwork. To put this right will need harmonisation of empires and transfer of responsibility (with resources and support) to frontline staff. It will require a shift in emphasis from demanding outcomes to demanding 'best process'. Most fundamentally of all, success will need patience to invest in a full understanding of healthcare problems and their possible solutions.
