The rapidly growing economy of China makes the country a major player in many fields of industrial development and technical innovation and within the global economy. It has been seen in the past in other countries as they developed more sophisticated economies, that there is a population shift with many people moving away from rural areas and farming into the cities where work is plentiful and relatively well paid. This leads to a shortage of labour to produce food for the urban population and a loss of agricultural land as houses and apartments are built on what used to be arable land for the flood of people into the cities. This is the current situation in China.
