Abstract:

Mastoid surgery is one of the benchmark procedures in ear, nose and throat (ENT) SpR training. All SpRs must demonstrate competency in this surgery before they are awarded the Certificate of Completion of Training. ENT, as in all surgical specialties, is currently going through changes in training. There is pressure to reduce the number of years while maintaining the same standard of surgical training. National and European policy has also meant that opportunities in the UK will be impaired. Training is often limited by the opportunities available to each training region and the number of SpRs competing for these opportunities.
