Abstract:
Until recently it was taken for granted in the UK that an educated and cultivated person was well versed in classical literature and philosophy. Fussing with unpleasant potions and fiddly equipment did not a scholar make. A first class degree in Classics was an entry ticket into the upper echelons of the British power structure. Clinicians returning home after a day of prodding abdomens, peering down throats, poking in ears or examining mouths could restore the mind by dipping into their well-worn copies of the world's best literature.Document Type: Short communication
