Abstract:
The 72-hour maximum working week of the New Deal for junior doctor hours was introduced in 1991 and stipulates that by August 2003 all doctors in training will be limited to 56 hours work. In August 2004 the European Working Time Directive (EWTD) will apply to all training grades and the Sindicato de Medicos de Asistencia Publica (SiMAP) ruling means that Trusts must guarantee 11 hours continuous rest away from the work place in any 24-hour period. Compliance with the above enforces full shift rotas for basic surgical trainees.Document Type: Research article
