Abstract:
The New NHS - Modern, Dependable guaranteed that anyone suspected of having cancer would be seen by a specialist within two weeks of referral. This was first implemented for breast cancer in April 1999 and subsequently for head and neck cancer in December 2000. To date, no audit of fast-track referrals for head and neck cancer has been published. At Southmead Hospital fast-track referrals for head and neck cancer are co-ordinated by a dedicated office and all referrals are faxed on a standardised form. The general practitioners are asked to tick the most appropriate box on the form (Figure 1). These details are then used to distribute the referral to the most relevant department for urgent appointment. We aim to show the pattern of referral and the yield of significant pathology through this system over a nine-month period.
