Abstract:
Objectives To study whether the cytokine profile in mid-trimester amniotic fluid (AF) would predict preterm labor. Methods Fifty-eight AF samples from women with uncomplicated pregnancies and 13 samples from women with subsequent spontaneous preterm delivery were retrospectively chosen from genetic amniocentesis material. Cytokine concentrations in AF samples were measured using cytokine-specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (transforming growth factor
, interleukin (IL)-10, IL-11, IL-12 p70, IL-15) and cytokine-specific solid-phase, two-site chemiluminescent enzyme immunometric assay (IL-6, IL-8, tumor necrosis factor
). Results The concentrations of measured cytokines did not significantly differ between the women with subsequent preterm and normal delivery. Conclusions Cytokine levels in mid-trimester AF samples seem not to be predictive of preterm labor, and early diagnosis of asymptomatic intra-amniotic infection on the basis of AF cytokines is uncertain.
