This paper examines three high-profile companies, each embroiled in potentially damaging events that occurred in recent history. The authors have taken a four-tiered approach in evaluating these crises and their effect on the company involved as follows: (1) overview of the event; (2) evaluation of management's response; (3) examination of public reaction to the event and the effect on the company's reputation; and (4) measurements of the economic impact of the event, in terms of financial results and shareholder value. These parameters are reviewed in the context of each case study. Following an examination of the three cases, there are some overall observations and conclusions regarding the events.Corporate Reputation Review (1999) 2, 268–277; doi:10.1057/palgrave.crr.1540084
